Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua better known by her stage name Seyi Shay, is a Nigerian based English singer-songwriter, recording artist, performer, and record producer. Her music is a blend of Afro-pop and R&B .She has produced couple of songs including soundtrack to Konami’s video game, Crime Life: Gang Wars (2005). She has writen songs like “You Will See” off Melanie C’s third studio album, Beautiful Intentions (2005), “White Lies”, a song from Chip’s Transition album. She was the lead singer for the now defunct pop girl group “From Above”. ” The group that comprised of six girls signed a recording deal with Sony’s Columbia Records and was managed by Mathew Knowles’ Music World Entertainment company.
Seyi Shay signed a record deal with Island Records In July 2015, Her debut studio album, Seyi or Shay was released in November 2015 , an album that spawned promotional singles like “Irawo”, “Ragga Ragga”, and “Chairman”. Her songs, “Loving Your Way” and “No Le Le” were instant hits when they dropped.
Early Life And Background
Seyi Shay is very much a Nigerian, but she was raised in Tottenham, London, England, by her Nigerian parents. Her biological father is a native of Ife while her mother is from Northern Nigeria. Shay has two elder brothers and an older sister. She and her siblings were raised by their single mother. She was born and raised in a religious setting and felt like a single child during her adolescence because she was always alone in her room . She was two years old when she first visited Nigeria and eventually attended the Command High School in Maryland, Lagos. She later returned to her place of birth London to complete her undergraduate studies. She studied music at a local UK college, and enrolled for University of East London where she bagged a degree in Business Management.
Her musical career was greatly influenced by members of her household. Seyi Shay’s late mother was a chorister and her sister used to compose songs for TV. Her brother on the other side was a radio and club disc jockey.
Music Career
Seyi Shay had a soft spot for music right from when she was a little child. She started performing at the age of six while at her secondary school choir. She has also performed for the London Community Gospel Choir during their world tour which spread across 13 cities in Japan . She was highly applauded for her performances in Japan and it gave her little fame at that time. According to the singer in a recent chat, she said her mother wasn’t in full support of her musical ambitions, she wanted Seyi to finish her studies and become a doctor or a lawyer but eventually, but prior to her passing away, she came to terms with Seyi’s choice and supported her asking her to put God first in her career.
Seyi Shay’s music career boosted up after she signed her first record deal with “No Apology”, a record company affiliated with George Martin (commonly referred to as the “Fifth Beatle”). She also wrote “You Will See”, a song that was included on Melanie C’s third studio album Beautiful Intentions (2005). she also wrote “White Lies”, a song from Chip’s Transition album. She officially became the lead singer for the now defunct Pop girl group, ‘From Above’. The group got signed to Sony/Columbia and was managed by Mathew Knowles’ Music World Entertainment Company. The band later separated after two years and Shay participated in the From Above UK singing audition. She emerged as the lead vocalist for the defunct group after the rounding of the audition

Seyi Shay met Sound Sultan when he came to London in 2011. The Naija Ninja artiste convinced her to relocate to Nigeria and pursue her musical career after listening to some of her songs because she had great potentials and promising career. While working with Sound Sultan in the UK, Shay met with Cecil Hammond of Flytime Promotions who later signed her to his record label called “Flytime Music”. It was Flytime Music who helped launch her solo career in Nigeria and introduced her to Nigeria music industry . Shay is currently one of the biggest female music merchants in Nigeria today who has produced and released several banging hits. She has worked with a number of producers in Nigeria, including Jay Sleek, Tee Y Mix, Del B, and Cobhams Asuquo, among others. Shey has performed on many big stages one of them was when she performed the hit song, “Bad” alongside international rap sensation, Wale at the Johnnie Walker Step Up to VIP Lifestyle Launch event.

The Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, that held in Lagos Nigeria was a very successful one but it left us epic moment to remember. Seyi Shay fell on stage while performing her latest “Yolo Yolo” song. The artist who stormed the stage to put up an electrifying performance to spice up the event fell, but was quick enough to pick up her microphone to continue with her performance. It wasn’t exactly clear why she fell , but from our observations it was clear that her long gown went between her legs and she slipped.
She recently revealed that her fall at The Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA has inspired a single. That is a good news though, at least it wasn’t all for nothing .
Endorsement And Recognition
Seyi Shay was unveiled as the brand ambassador for telecommunications service provider Etisalat in November 2013. The news of the endorsement deal was revealed by the telecommunication giant.
