It is a great pleasure to be here on the 29th of May, our Democracy Day. Allow me first to express my warm appreciation to the adminstration of the federal republic of Nigeria for keeping our democratic values alive, I also want to thank the people of Niger state for contributing positively to the growth of our great nation.
Democracy has a lot of meaning but to me, it signifies freedom.
Freedom of choice, freedom of expression, freedom from Military dictatorship and so many forms of freedom.
In May 1999, citizens of Nigeria were chanting freedom, it was the final return of civil liberties, free press and an end to arbitrary tortures.
I want to take this opportunity to restate the strong support for democracy and human rights by the government of Niger state.
If democracy is to progress in Nigeria, we need to rediscover our mutual trust and respect for the rule of law and the constitution.
Part of the reasons our socioeconomic process is in a state of regression is because we are not ready to change and work together. Citizens do not trust politicians and politicians do not trust citizens but who is to blame?
Two wrongs don't make a right. Resilient societies are able to solve disputes through mediation and dialogue but never through violent protests and organized riots.
Developing effective conflict prevention mechanisms and infrastructures is something my team and I are working on.
Our aim is to strengthen civil society, empower men and women alike and uphold the rule of law.
Today I bring to you a message of not only freedom but peace.
Niger state can achieve absolute peace, well, it's up to me and you to cooperate and bring an end to kidnappings and social vices.
Finally, I want to utilize this medium to thank you all for believing in me, I assure you that I will do whatever is right, and whatever is best to serve the people of Niger State.
I thank you all for your kind attention; and I wish you all a happy democracy day.
